#038 The Fifth Night

My goodness, this page came out looking more like a Christmas scene than I intended. XD I promise, that is not a north star up there, and we will not find a manger at the end of this journey.

Welcome to Ilk-tay, the village at the end of the canyon, home to the highly respected Na-Rune-Tok Mair’alyn.

Sonya and I created five different storyboard sketches of this place before we settled on a final design. It’s hard to come up with a village centered around a waterfall without putting the houses in danger of flooding, not to mention the issue of how loud a waterfall is when you’re right up under it. I had wanted a waterfall inside a cave, but the echo alone would make talking to people impossible. Another design had a single huge waterfall, but there was no room for houses after that. This ended up being a nice combination of a number of elements I was playing with, adding in the foreground silhouette idea from Sonya so we’d have a good idea of the scope of this place.

In addition to the stilt houses as we saw in Lisk-tay, there are stone flood walls around the middle pool, even if they’re not highly visible here. I suspect the parts closest to the water still flood on occasion.  I also suspect that few people in the village are sober enough to actually care, so long as they can get hauled onto higher ground and keep the party going.

Once again. Welcome to Ilk-tay.
